The Portuguese Diaspora Council is a private non-profit association, established on 2012, under the High Patronage of His Excellency the President of the Portuguese Republic, Prof. Dr. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa – also Honorary President of the Portuguese Diaspora Council (at the time of establishment, Prof. Dr. Aníbal Cavaco Silva) – as well as the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs – Honorary Vice-President of the Portuguese Diaspora Council (at the time of establishment, Dr. Paulo Portas). In 2019, it was recognized by the Portuguese State with the status of Non-Governmental Organization for Development (NGDO) and in 2017 the institution was awarded the distinction of Public Utility.
The association’s main purpose is to strengthen relations between Portugal and its diaspora, Portuguese and Portuguese-descendants living abroad so that they, through their merit, talent and influence, can contribute to strengthening Portugal’s reputation and image in the world and, consequently, to the development and prosperity of our country. The Portuguese Diaspora Council main instrument of intervention is the so-called World Portuguese Network, a network of contacts involving a wide range of Portuguese people with proven influence in several major areas.
